I am the Referee

“I am the referee. I spoke to you both in the dressing room. Obey my command at all times. You both know the rules.”

'I am the Referee' is a book written by and starring two Medway based residents. Currently on sale at Waterstones and on the Amazon website, and available to borrow at Medway libraries, ‘I am the Referee’ follows Ian’s fascinating transition from Professional Boxer to a star referee for the World Boxing Championships.

Ian grew up in Medway as the only black boy in his school during the sixties, and was later cheated out of his boxing dream. Ian went on to become the first black British referee to officiate a Heavyweight title fight between Vitali Klitschko and Shannon Briggs.

This one-hour book discussion gave an in- depth insight into the life of Ian John Lewis, and how the writer Mark Heffernan approached writing the autobiography. Audience members were invited to take part in a Q+A.

I got to listen to the experiences of someone from my area and how he’s become a success.

It was highly enjoyable and I would see an event like this again.
