I am the Referee’

I am the referee. I spoke to you both in the dressing room. Obey my command at all times. You both know the rules.”

‘I am the Referee’ follows the fascinating story of Ian John Lewis and his transition from Professional Boxer to a star referee for the World Boxing Championships.

Ian grew up in Medway as the only black boy in his school during the 1960s, and was later cheated out of his boxing dream. This injustice would break many people, but instead Ian went on to become the first black British referee to officiate a Heavyweight title fight between Vitali Klitschko and Shannon Briggs.

This one-hour book discussion will give an in- depth insight into the life of Ian John Lewis, and how the writer of ‘I am the Referee’ Mark Heffernan approached writing the autobiography. Audience members will be invited to take part in a Q+A.
