Caribbean Storytime with Anansi the Spider and Brer Rabbit

Anansi is one of the most well-known and important characters in West African and Caribbean folklore. Brer Rabbit is the formidable trickster that originated in African mythology and travelled to the New World when these stories were re-told by slaves.

This special storytelling session led by nursery officer Marilyn Augustus, and a physical storyteller and dancer, will introduce the characters of Anansi the Spider and Brer Rabbit, and explain the background of these stories; from its origins in times of slavery,  to its use as a method of sharing moral advice and teachings in a new land.

Children can listen to the mischievous antics of Brer Rabbit and explore the messages of the stories through discussion and play. Then settle down and enjoy a live physical performance from the Anansi the Spider collection.

To end the session join in some animal crafts; make a rabbit face-mask or a spider headband, and even get your face painted as one of the animals from the many stories.

Ages: 3-12
