LIVE BEFORE YOU DIE

BY BYRON VINCENT AND DAVE MCGINN

What do you do when you have a best mate who is so sad he might die?

Especially considering up until now your friendship has mostly consisted of a mutual appreciation of 90s hip hop, borderline alcoholism and finding creative ways to call each other d*ckhead.

Byron is a bipolar performance artist, Dave only communicates in insults. Together they must find a way to fix Byron's broken soul before it's too late. Funny, tragic and shockingly honest, this is a true story of hopelessness and friendship told by two men on a desperate quest for happiness.

UGLY CHIEF

A Eulogy for a Living Soul

BY VICTORIA MELODY

This spring, artist and performer Victoria Melody teams up with her dad, celebrity TV antique dealer Mike Melody, for her most ambitious show yet. Ugly Chief is a comedy based on true-life events, performed by a real-life father and daughter.

In 2013, Mike Melody was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Victoria was put in charge of planning the funeral her Dad would want – complete with eulogies, a congregation dressed in Blackpool FC’s tangerine colour and a New Orleans jazz procession. A year later the doctors realised they had misdiagnosed Mike. But they are going ahead with the funeral anyway…

Ross & Rachel tells the mind-bending, heart-breaking story of what happens when a couple that was always meant to be together, gets together. And stays together.

In this disquieting duologue for one performer, Olivier-nominee and Critics Circle Most Promising Playwright winner James Fritz (Four Minutes, Twelve Seconds, Hampstead Theatre/West End) takes an unflinching look at the myths of modern love.

Legacy Closing Weekend: Exploring Shakespeare in Black Theatre

Join Lyrici Arts and Medway Libraries at the closing of the ten-month ‘Legacy’ project!

2016 marked the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare so in celebration of this the Legacy closing weekend features national actor Wil Johnson, and Royal Shakespeare Company Assistant Director, Anthony Ekundayo Lennon, as they give an insight into their BME acting and directing careers inspired by productions of Shakespeare’s plays. Children's activities are also available.

In the morning take part in an acting workshop with Anthony, as he demonstrates some of the direction techniques he used during the RSC’s 2015 production of Othello. Children can take part in an arts craft session to make and decorate a King Lear crown, and take part in a drama workshop.

During the afternoon experience an intimate talk and Q+A session with Wil Johnson and Anthony Ekundayo Lennon about Shakespeare in Black Theatre.  Wil will give a live performance from his role as the Earl of Kent in Talawa Theatre’s production of King Lear.

To end the day and conclude the Legacy project, join us to look back at some of the highlights of the programme and ask any burning questions to the key project leaders, then groove to a live reggae set by The Vanbrugh Hill Music Syndicate with a selection of Caribbean canapes and drinks.

For session timings please see below.

Othello- Adult's workshop with Anthony Ekundayo Lennon

After a moment of warming up consisting of a selection of exercises and games we will be introduced to two pieces of text. A scene from Sir Thomas More which scholars agree Shakespeare had some involvement with creating, and a scene from Othello.

Anthony will work on one specific moment from Othello. The words of Desdemona while confiding in Iago about her plight; expressing her love for a man that she feels she has ‘lost’. A totally committed attempt at expressing her feelings to the very same man that is destroying her relationship.

The aim of the session will be to play, enjoy exploration and gain a sense of ownership of so-called ‘classic’ writing in a way that will hopefully lead to participants going on to seek out similar writing and also think about doing some writing themselves.

10- 11.30am

Age 16+
